What can gratitude do for you?
Improve your immunity
When you’re stressed out, your immune response is lowered, putting you at greater risk for illness. However, having increased mental well-being can keep your immunity thriving.
Better relationships with everyone
Whether it’s your parents, spouse, kids, friends, or coworkers, having gratitude makes it easier to strengthen these relationships.
Practice optimism
Even if you’re not optimistic by nature, practicing gratitude can rewire your brain to be a happier person. Keep up the habit weekly, and in a few months, you’ll notice your outlook on life has improved.
So, now that you know what gratitude can do for you, how can you engage in this practice?
- Keep a journal
When it comes to gratitude, keeping a diary of the things you’re grateful for is an excellent step in the right direction. Write about a favorite moment that happened today, describe a person you love, or jot down a few things you’re grateful for. Even if you keep this in the notes on your phone, it will boost your gratitude levels.
- Make a visual
If you’re more of a visual person, try gratitude mapping. You can make a board to show everything you’re grateful for. Place it somewhere that you’ll see it every day.
- Put it in a jar
Keep paper and pen handy near a mason jar, and every time you feel thankful for something or something good happens, write it down and put it inside the jar. When you feel sad, shake the jar and randomly select a slip of paper to remind yourself of good things.
- Meditate or pray (or both!)
Start your morning off with a meditation where you focus on the things you’re grateful for. Or lead with a prayer. Both of these practices can help you tap into gratitude.
- Give back
And finally, one of the best ways to bring in gratitude is by giving to those in need—volunteer where you feel comfortable, whether your time, your resources, or both.
